Establishing the Presidential Committee on Food Standards
WHEREAS, the public health of the American people is a priority of the Federal Government, essential to the preservation of national security, economic productivity, and the general welfare;
WHEREAS, recent data indicate a rise in obesity rates among adults in the United States, resulting in an increasing prevalence of chronic health conditions, reduced life expectancy, and escalating healthcare costs;
WHEREAS, this trend adversely affects military readiness, as a growing number of prospective recruits are unable to meet the minimum physical and medical standards required for enlistment in the Armed Forces of the United States, thereby undermining the nation’s capacity to maintain a robust and capable all-volunteer force;
NOW, THEREFORE, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered as follows:
There shall be created within the Public Health Establishment an advisory body to be known as the President’s Committee on Food Standards which shall be composed of nine members designated by the President.The Committee is hereby authorized, on behalf of the President, to examine present food standards, food procurement and distribution procedures, and labeling to determine whether current food standards must be revised. The Committee shall confer with the Secretary of Agriculture, Secretary of the Interior, Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of Labor, Secretary of Health and Human Services, Secretary of Transportation, and the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.All executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government are hereby authorized and directed to cooperate fully with the Committee and to furnish such information, assistance, and resources as the Committee may require in the performance of its duties.When requested by the Committee, personnel of any executive department or agency shall appear before the Committee and make available such documents and testimony as the Committee deems necessary to carry out its responsibilities.The Committee shall continue in existence until such time as the President may terminate it by Executive Order.
